Rich snippets are some data formats that search engines can read and use the info in enriching the way search results are presented. You may have come across results in search engines that also show some star ratings next to the results – these are the so called rich snippets. The rich snippets make the search results more eye-catchy, what can result in the end in more visits delivered by search engines – and you want the highly targeted traffic delivered for free by search engines!

There are several implementation opportunities for rich snippets based on the type of website you manage. Rich snippets can be used in relation with: applications, authors, events, music, people, products or products with many offers, recipes or reviews. Below you can see a screenshot for a result in Google search engine using rich snippets (see the photo in the result + star rating):

More exemplifications of results for all the above rich snippet implementations can be found on Google Rich Snippet testing tool page.

In order for a rich snippet to be valid and for search engines to be able to read the correct information, you need to make use of certain coding formats for microdata. On standard HTML, in order for search engines to read and show the info, you should make changes as bellow:

Old Coding<div>
L’Amourita Pizza
9 out of 10, based on 24 ratings.
5 user reviews.
Rich Snippet Coding<div itemscope itemtype="">
<span itemprop="itemreviewed">L’Amourita Pizza</span>
<img itemprop="photo" src="pizza.jpg" />
<span itemprop="rating" itemscope itemtype="">
<span itemprop="average">9</span>
out of <span itemprop="best">10</span>
based on <span itemprop="votes">24</span> ratings.
<span itemprop="count">5</span> user reviews.

If you are using for your website a CMS platform such as WordPress or Joomla, there are several plugin options offered for free that you can make use of:

What should you also know:

  • using rich snippet coding does not guarantee the inclusion in search engine results of the new format
  • do not abuse the rich snippet implementation as this can be seen as abuse on search engines and search engine results and it can have the opposite effect of what you hope to achieve
